An impressive large 19th-century French garniture mantel clock set featuring a dramatic Marly horse sculpture above a richly veined rouge marble clock case with ornate gilt bronze mounts and matching four-arm candelabra.
Complete three-piece garniture sets of this scale are increasingly difficult to find and create a striking centerpiece for a mantel, console, or library.
Sets like this were produced in France during the late 19th century as statement mantelpieces for formal salons and drawing rooms. The sculpture references the famous “Marly Horses” commissioned for the Château de Marly under Louis XV and sculpted by Guillaume Coustou.
The clock contains a classic French Paris movement stamped with the Samuel Marti (SM) maker’s mark, one of the most respected movement manufacturers of the period. Marti movements are known for their reliability and were widely used in quality French mantel clocks of the late 1800s.
